The Jimi Austin - Suits

album cover

By Greta Cornett

The Jimi Austin have become the fine wine of local music. They just keep getting better with age and Suits EP is a prime example, as it is their best record to date.

“Wait for the Blast” starts the album off with an explosive punch. Chris Anderson portrays a brilliant story with his abstract lyrics while Ian Haygood throws in a guitar hook that reminds me of the Smiths circa 1984.

“Le Doghouse” has the best tongue in cheek lyrics on the album, conjuring up thoughts of someone who may be in the doghouse: “Cold food on the floor… Don’t even come back home to me… In my Doghouse is where I will be.” It also provides the funkiest groove with a drum and bass breakdown over the verse.
“Doris” is the catchiest song and will more than likely leave you humming it for the next few days. Which leads us to my favorite song on the album, “The Great Divide.” You can actually feel the pent-up anguish in each word Anderson belts out. The band is completely in tune with each other; listening and playing off one another. The song culminates into a giant storm and it feels as if you are living in the middle of the confusion and are lucky enough to experience the musical conversation they use to anchor each other together.

Overall, Suits is tight, clean, transitions well, and the composition is progressive yet tangible. It is up there for best release this year. There is one thing very wrong with it: it only has four songs, which is just not enough.
